Can Kendall Graveman do it again?

Well well, here we go again. Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s Open Game Thread! I’ll be joining you here for my first thread/chart/recap since July 28, 2017. On that day, Ariel Miranda tossed six innings while striking out 10 New York Mets in Seattle. But alas, Washington native Michael Conforto slugged two dingers in his first-ever game in his home state and the Mets won 7-5. Today we’re looking for a similar pitching performance from a guy who flashed some exciting stuff last time out.

Maybe it wasn’t the perfect debut as a Mariner for Graveman on Monday against the Astros, when he allowed seven runs (six earned) in four innings of work. But he flashed that high velocity and showed why some us were excited about him going into the season. Today he’ll try to put it all together against the A’s as the M’s try to get back to .500.

Graveman is looking to follow up on what’s been a good pattern for Mariners starters. Through the last three appearances for M’s starters, they’ve thrown 19.1 innings without allowing an earned run. Only seven hits have been collected against Mariners starters over that time. Let’s keep it going, Kendall.

Some housekeeping to take care of: the Mariners made a roster move ahead of today’s matchup.

It makes sense with the healthy return of Austin Nola. There’s no longer a need for the third catcher on the roster, and it’s time for Erik Swanson to show what he’s got in this evaluation year.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give a special birthday shout-out to Dylan Moore. How about a birthday dinger today, huh?

And what do you know, the birthday boy gets to hit second in the order today as Kyle Seager earns the day off. Not a big fan of two days off in a row for Tim Lopes, though. I’d much rather see him out there than Dee Gordon right now.
