Van der Vaart reveals why he treated Tottenham as the biggest club in the world
Rafael Van der Vaart has admitted that he was pleased that he made the decision to join Tottenham back in the summer of 2010.
Despite wearing the colours of Tottenham for just a couple of years, the Dutchman is revered by the Spurs fan base.
His name can still occasionally be heard sung by fans (set to the tune of KC & The Sunshine Band’s ‘Give It Up’), a chant which Van der Vaart admitted he quite liked.
Speaking to 90 min, the former Spurs star said: “It’s a nice song, by the way. It’s a good one.
“You know it’s really special because I just played there for two years and, of course, I played well – especially against Arsenal – so you know how it works.
“Always when I come back it feels like home. For me, it was maybe one of the best steps in my career.”
The 37-year-old arrived in North London from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day with a massive reputation but few knew what to expect of the midfielder at Tottenham given his superstar status.
However, Van der Vaart did not just ooze class from the second he stepped out on the pitch at White Hart Lane but he also wore his heart on his sleeve, which is why the fans took to him.
Van der Vaart revealed he treated Tottenham as the biggest club in the world when he was at the club.
He added: “I think that’s important as to why the fans loved me because my biggest advice to every player is when you go to a club, for them, Tottenham, is the biggest club in the world.
“As a player, you have other dreams but that’s what I learnt during my career: for the fans, everywhere I played, that was the biggest club in the world and if you fight for that, they will love you.”

Van der Vaart was a joy to watch in his prime and had a great knack of getting goals when we needed it. While everybody recognises that the former midfielder had a wand of a left foot but he often does not get the credit he deserves for his ability to smell opportunities and be at the right place and the right time.
