NETFLIX has dropped the eerie first look trailer at Cursed which sees sword-wielding monks on a killing spree.

Based on the New York Times bestselling book, Cursed is a re-imagination of the Arthurian legend.

It is told through the eyes of Nimue (Katherine Langford), a young woman with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful – and tragic- Lady of the Lake.

After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a humble mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword.

Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.

The trailer has Nimue reveal in a voiceover: “They came while we slept, to cleanse the world of our kind.”

As she speaks the sword-wielding religious men attack villagers as flames shoot up around them.

Nimue continues: “Because we’re different, because magic runs through us, because we have what they want.

“The legend says this sword belongs to the one true king, but what if the sword chooses a queen?”

As she finishes speaking, Nimue is seen rising from the lake with the sword in her hand, before black veins creep across her face.

Cursed is a coming-of-age story whose themes are familiar to our own time: the obliteration of the natural world, religious terror, senseless war, and finding the courage to lead in the face of the impossible.

It also stars Devon Terrell as Arthur and Gustaf Skarsgård as Merlin, as well as Daniel Sharman (Weeping Monk), Sebastian Armesto (King Uther Pendragon), Matt Stokoe (Gawain), Lily Newmark (Pym).

Cursed will premiere on Netflix on Friday, July 17.
