The writer gave an honest opinion of how she feels about US cops, as she wrote in her column on Hollywood Reporter: “I’m always looking at cops through a complicated, shattered lens because … I’m a Black woman.”

“When I created Power, I made a conscious decision to write every single character as a mix of good and bad, the cops and the criminals in equal measure.”

Courtney, 43, is currently working on a show about corruption within the police force, called Dirty Thirty, which will air on HBO Max.

She added: “I’ve worked with cops (including some real heroes), prosecutors and defense attorneys to anchor those depictions in reality — including brutality, police and prosecutorial misconduct.”

The producer admitted that she worries about potentially becoming the next Breonna Taylor, who was shot by police in March of this year.

She also called for more writers from different ethnic backgrounds, as 4.8 percent of working television writers are black and the number is even lower in Latino, Asian American and Native communities.

She explained:  “I’d argue that now is the time to push for series that can illuminate the problems we’ve seen for years in American policing. “But in order to create cop series that are diverse and multidimensional, we have to change the ownership of the narrative — which goes beyond just the showrunners and writers.”

50 Cent was one of the people that inspire the character of James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick[/caption]

Last month, Courtney revealed the two real-life figures who inspired the show’s main character James ‘Ghost’ St Patrick.

In a Q&A with fans, the showrunner said the drug lord – played by Omari Hardwick – was inspired by famous rapper 50 Cent, as well as her own father.

She said: “Ghost was inspired by my Dad and 50 Cent.”

50 Cent – who serves as an executive producer on the show – was involved in selling drugs before pursuing his career in music.
