Report: Tottenham could be only big-six club with no money to spend this summer
According to a report in The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur will have to settle for free transfers and loan deals this summer as they do not have any money to spend.
Spurs are said to have been hit hard by the financial impact of COVID-19 due to the debt they owe on their new stadium (Sky Sports), with previous reports suggesting that Jose Mourinho’s transfer budget had subsequently been slashed (Mirror).
The Telegraph have now confirmed that the Lilywhites, along with their north London rivals Arsenal, are the only two clubs who will not have funds to spend on signings this summer.
It is said that Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are expected to strengthen while Manchester City will get a cash influx from the potential sale of John Stones and Leroy Sane.
The report also claims that Arsenal could decide to sell Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Alexandre Lacazette in order to free up some funds for their targets.
However, it is revealed that all of Tottenham’s big stars, including Harry Kane, are set to stay put at North London, and the club will thus be forced to go for free agents or swap deals.
Far from being disheartened by the lack of funds, reports indicate that Mourinho is relishing the challenge of reshaping the squad on a shoestring budget and helping Spurs challenge for honours next season (Mirror).

One advantage we have over Arsenal, Chelsea, and potentially Manchester United is that we have far fewer holes in the squad to fill and so arguably do not need as many new additions. If we manage to land Hojbjerg, Willian, and Munier, along with a decent back-up for Harry Kane, we will have enough options to get by. While these additions will probably be enough to see us cement a place in the top four next season, we will need far more investment if we are to have any chance of closing the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City, which seems to be Mourinho’s main ambition.
