Arsenal in danger of losing key signing from last summer
David Luiz only signed a one-year contract at Arsenal, meaning he could leave within the coming weeks, according to reports.
Arsenal signed Luiz from Chelsea last summer to add experience at the back following the departure of Laurent Koscielny, and the Brazilian defender has settled in relatively well.
It was thought at the time that Luiz had put pen to paper on a two-year deal, but according to Sky Sports, it has now emerged that the contract was only for an initial 12 months.
That means Luiz is technically out of contract at the end of next month, although given the likelihood of the Premier League season passing beyond that date should it resume, measures may be brought in to protect players approaching the ends of their deals.
Should that not be the case, though, then Arsenal will have to find a way to secure Luiz’s long-term future – with the defender reportedly happy to stay at the Emirates Stadium.
His experience has been a vital asset for Mikel Arteta since the coach replaced Unai Emery midway through the season, and the former midfielder wants to keep the 33-year-old, having sung his praises on various occasions.
Negotiations will need to commence soon, though, if the two parties are to continue their association – with Sky reminding that the centre-back has put on record his desire to finish his career at Benfica, the club who gave him his first opportunity in Europe.
