Turtle smashes through car windshield and nearly decapitates passenger

A woman was nearly decapitated by a turtle that smashed through the windshield of her car.

Latonya Lark was out running errands with her brother Kevin Grant on May 12 in Savannah, Georgia when the reptile came crashing through there windshield while they were traveling northbound on Harry S Truman Parkway.

Luckily for the pair, the turtle got lodged in the window instead of smashing all the way through.

‘I thought it was a brick, and I told (my brother), “my God, there’s a brick!”‘ Lark told WSAV-TV.

Both Grant and Lark said they were shocked by a loud boom and were covered in shattered glass before they realized what happened.

‘When the glass broke, the first thing that comes to my mind was just to shield myself,’ Grant, a licensed cosmetologist, said.

‘So it was just like, you know, turn and cover.’

Lark said she believes the turned somehow was sent flying toward their car from a vehicle in front of them that hit the reptile on the road.

After the incident, the pair pulled over and called for help. According to the police report, the turtle damaged the car so badly, it was unable to be driven safely and had to be towed.

‘Even the police officer said if that glass wasn’t as thick as it was and I didn’t slow down the way I did when I saw the object coming, it would have been disastrous,’ Lark said.

Officers were able to remove the turtle from the windshield and it initially survived, but it lost one of its legs in the incident, police said.

However, when Lark called days later to check on the turtle’s condition, she learned that it died after losing too much blood.

In the wake of the freak accident, Lark warned other drivers to be more attentive when behind the wheel.

‘If people are not paying attention to the road…you know, whoever hit that turtle, they had to have been flying,’ she said.
