Charlotte York is one of the best, most complex characters throughout Sex and the City because she experiences great character development. She started off as the conservative one of the group who still believed in fairytales and having her happily ever after.
Yet as time went on, she started to gain independence, becoming more open-minded to other people and possibilities that would end up making her happiest. With that being said, here are all of the biggest ways that Charlotte York Goldenblatt has changed over the course of the iconic HBO series.
It's safe to say that as the seasons of SATC passed, Charlotte got more and more desperate to settle down with someone and to find her one true love. Out of all the women, Charlotte was the one who longed for a traditional marriage the most, and it showed.
In the first handful of seasons, she seemed to be fine with just having fun by going on one date after the other with a string of different fellas. Yet as she got older, she seemed to believe that time was of the essence and she became more desperate to find "the one".
People often label Carrie Bradshaw as the most fashionable of the bunch, yet we'd have to argue otherwise. While Carrie had some fashion no-no's throughout the series, Charlotte always looked incredibly elegant, consistently sporting beautiful outfits throughout the show.
Yet as the series progressed, her sense of fashion became more and more elegant and we couldn't believe how lovely her outfits were.
Charlotte always prided herself on being traditional and conservative which was pretty different from the rest of the women on the classic HBO series.
Yet as the show went on, Charlotte definitely loosened up a bit and we were relieved when she finally discovered how boring being conventional could truly be. Harry was able to help her see that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that sometimes the best marriages are the ones that you never saw coming.
Charlotte York was always the character who seemed to care the most about surface-level appearances. This is why she was so happy to be with Trey because she believed he looked the part of the perfect husband for her, and she was thrilled over the fact that he came from such a wealthy family.
While these two looked great on paper, they were a hot mess in real life and Charlotte realized she wasn't happy. Then Harry came in and turned her world upside down despite the fact that he's not what she expected her husband to look like.
At the beginning of the series, Charlotte wanted a classic fairytale lifestyle where nothing ever went wrong and everything was rainbows and sunshine for the rest of her days. She expected the perfect marriage with her very own children and the most exquisite wedding imaginable.
Charlotte learned the hard way that fairytales were fictional, and that life doesn't always work out the way that you always thought it would- And that's perfectly okay. In fact, it's a good thing!
It's safe to say that Charlotte York became much more accepting as the series went on. At first, she had a very strict checklist for what she wanted out of life, yet as time went on, she realized the checklist would never be completely fulfilled.
She wanted to get pregnant and have kids, yet she realized she couldn't. So instead, she adopted a beautiful child with Harry that she loved dearly. She accepted the way life turned out for her and wouldn't ask for anything more.
Charlotte was always a good friend when it came to her relationship with Carrie, Miranda, and Samantha. Although she'd often act prudish and was sometimes judgemental of their lifestyles, it's clear she would do anything for her friends.
She became an even better companion as the series went on, and she even claimed her best friends were her soul mates. That's something she probably never would have said in season one when she was so focused on her dating life.
Charlotte always had a good head on her shoulders, yet sometimes she would act a bit like a doormat when it came to her friendships as well as her romantic relationships.
Whenever her friends would throw a dig at her for being a bit on the prudish side (at least compared to them) she would just take it, but as time went on, she stood her ground and backed up her beliefs. When Carrie called out Charlotte for not helping her out financially, she stood her ground and said she didn't owe Carrie anything- Which was the truth.
Charlotte was once extremely uptight and stuck in her ways despite the fact that her four friends were all incredibly adventurous.
Sure, at times she would seem just as care-free as the others, but as a whole, she was quite stuffy in nature. Yet finally when she ended up with Harry, he taught her how to be more fun and adventurous.
One of the best changes Charlotte experienced throughout Sex and the City was that she learned to love herself more. At first, she would let men treat her poorly and she would let others walk all over her for the sake of being civil and polite.
Yet once she gained self-love, she was honest with what she wanted and she refused to settle. It was great to see her growth throughout the series, and she is certainly the character who experiences the most growth.
