DAILY press briefings are given by the government to inform the public on any updates on coronavirus.
Here’s what was said in the briefing today.
The press briefings usually take place at around 5pm.
The Government uses the briefings to update the public and press on the latest news on the deadly bug, and have been doing so since March 16.
The briefings are held at 10 Downing Street.
On the weekends, the press briefings are held at 2.30pm.
Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Dominic Raab gave the updates on coronavirus this afternoon, during the daily Downing Street press briefing.
Raab confirmed that the UK death toll has hit 30,165 after an increase of 539 fatalities since yesterday.
He also confirmed that 86,583 tests carried out yesterday, with 5,614 positive new cases.
Raab said the “virus is not beaten yet” despite a fall in the death rate.
He says: “The virus is not beaten yet. It remains deadly and infectious… Because we held firm three weeks ago we are in a position where we can start to think about the next steps.
“To get this right we will have milestones. At each point when we take these decisions they will be based on the five steps and the scientific advice.”
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said that the UK has “passed the peak” of the virus.
He thanked the British public and the NHS for a “monumental effort”.
The conferences are co-chaired by experts and officials from the health and scientific communities, who also give updates on how their departments are supporting the Government.
On May 6, the briefing was led by Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, who said that more than 30,000 people have died from coronavirus in the UK.
Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, was accompanied by the Medical Director of Public Health England, Professor Yvonne Doyle, and the Medical Director of NHS England Nikki Kanani, in giving the briefing on May 6.
Mr Jenrick said 69,493 tests were carried out, meaning the government fell short of its daily target of 100,000.
He said 649 people died, bringing the total number of confirmed coronavirus deaths to 30,076.
Also, it was reported that sixty-seven million PPE items were delivered across England during the month of April.
