Piers Morgan claims government bans ministers appearing on GMB

Piers Morgan accused ministers of ‘shameful incompetence’ after claiming the government has put a ban on GMB (Picture: ITV/PA)

Piers Morgan claims the government has banned ministers from appearing on Good Morning Britain in a scathing attack accusing them of ‘shameful incompetence’.

The TV presenter tweeted about the ban, claiming it was issued to senior Tory MPs after a series of bungling interviews in which certain ministers ‘made complete fools of themselves’.

He told Boris Johnson the alleged move was ‘a pathetic and cowardly response’.

The GMB host, 55, has been praised for his grilling of politicians during the coronavirus crisis. He has been absent from the show this week after taking a test for coronavirus when he started to show symptoms.

Piers tested negative for Covid-19 on Monday but has remained off work after still feeling ill. He today announced he will return to front the show on Monday.

Among the car crash interviews hinted at by the presenter was one with Minister for Care Helen Whately last month who was slammed by Piers for saying 61 NHS workers had died when the figure was actually far greater.

She stumbled through answers, claiming to be unaware of well publicised Government data and finding herself unable to explain why the Government was not hitting its testing targets.

Work and Pensions Secretary Thérèse Coffey was also torn apart on GMB during an interview in April over personal protective equipment (PPE) for NHS staff. She pleaded with Piers to stop shouting at her as she failed to answer questions on NHS and care worker deaths.

Piers has not identified which ‘mild symptom’ prompted his test for Covid-19 but today tweeted: ‘Relax everyone, I’ll be back Monday.’

He shared his test result on social media earlier this week, saying: ‘UPDATE: My COVID-19 test was negative. I was advised to take the test by my doctor after developing possible coronavirus symptoms, and was entitled to do so as a Govt-designated essential worker.

‘I’ll be back on @GMB as soon as my doctor advises I’m OK to return to work.’
