One of the latest TikTok trends involves users peeing their pants for the world to see. TikTok trends are nothing new, but this is an example of one of those that is more uncomfortable to watch than anything else.
TikTok is an app that can be used to share a variety of different videos. While some use the app for short comedic videos, others like to lip-sync or dance to their favorite songs. With the amount of freedom the app offers, and the increased amount of free time that many now have because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is no wonder that the app has only gotten more popular in recent months.
The pee your pants challenge originated on TikTok on April 21st with a post by Liam Weyer. Since then, the #peeyourpantschallenge hashtag has generated millions of views with countless users recreating and reacting to the original. In a conversation with Insider, Weyer explained that the challenge was created "as a parody of the other challenges that have gone viral on the internet in an attempt to show how pointless they are." Regardless of whether Weyer's attempt to showcase the pointlessness of TikTok challenges is a success, it has resulted in a major trend on the platform. Not just on TikTok either, with many having also took to other social media services, including Twitter, to share the videos and their reactions as well.
Peeing your pants intentionally was also a challenge set by Adam Sandler as Billy in the 1995 movie, Billy Madison. As Billy is working his way through school, one scene shows the class going on a field trip. At the end of the trip, Billy's friend, Ernie, played by Jared Cook, has peed his pants. To save him from any further embarrassment, Billy pretends to do the same and looks to convince the rest of the class that it's a cool thing to do. While the movie contains many memorable quotes, the scene leads up to an older lady working at the location saying "if peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis."
Whether or not the current crop of TikTok users have seen the movie, TikTok is proving how times have changed over the years. While Sandler's character had to actively convince others that peeing your pants was cool to hide the fact one kid had, those on TikTok are broadcasting to the world that they have, and trending on the platform because of it.
