Late Model Teams Rock Peterborough Speedway’s Saturday Night World
Cream of the crop. Top of the heap. Every hometown speedway offers fans a headline class that is part of the weekly program and at Peterborough Speedway, it’s the Late Model division. With nearly 20 teams registered and scoring points in at least one main event during the 2019 season, supporters of the popular Central Ontario speed plant saw some exciting battles week-after-week.
Local favourite Dan McHattie – of nearby Cavan, Ontario – visited Dart Heating & Air Conditioning victory lane on 10 occasions, on the way to his latest track championship. Often coming from deep in the field due to the track’s rulebook pertaining to previous feature winners, McHattie finished with a 119 point cushion over Mark Gordon. Brandon Feeney, Kyle Batty and Tim Batty rounded-out the top 5 finishing positions.
“While some people book time in a portrait studio, my favourite family photos have always taken place in the winner’s circle,” said the father of 2, who works as a mechanic at Kerr Industries in Oshawa. “Any chance I get to help grow the sport and introduce local stock car racing to a new fan base is a good thing.”
There’ll be 11 chances to see the Late Models tackle the tight, tricky bullring on Mount Pleasant Road during Peterborough Speedway’s 2020 regular season. Saturday, June 27th’s Summer Kick-Off features the Cottage Country Late Model 50 lap ‘A’ main.
Track owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse and his team are aiming for a Saturday, May 16th lid-lifter with the Pure Country 105 Season Opener – with free spectator grandstand admission – to start the 53rd consecutive schedule of operation at the venue known as Canada’s Toughest 3rd of a Mile Paved Oval.
The line-up includes the home track Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock, Jiffy Lube Mini Stock, KOD Disposal Super Stock, Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck and Late Models, plus the Trailers Plus Ontario Legends. Action takes the Great Canadian RV green flag at 5:00.
“Even though there are several pieces of the plan that need to come together before we can get things underway, right now we’re keep a positive attitude and taking a ‘business as usual’ approach to racing this year,” said Josiasse. “I’m hopeful that we get things rolling without any major delays, but with things changing very quickly also encourage our fans and race teams to keep checking the web-site and social media pages for updates and info.”
