Paul Scholes played with a plethora of top strikers during his illustrious career at Manchester United.
But the greatest midfielder of his generation struck a special relationship with a few in particular. Scholes has named Ruud Van Nistelrooy as his favourite centre forward he has played behind at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman was as deadly as they came in front of goal, scoring 150 goals in 219 United appearances. He left the club in 2006 to join Real Madrid and spent four seasons in the Spanish capital.
And Scholes has attributed his unequivocal desire to become the best goalscorer as the reason behind his choice.

“I played number 10 with Ruud van Nistelrooy for a season and I loved it. He’s just a ruthless, ruthless goalscorer. He just lived for scoring goals,” he told the UTD podcast, as quoted by Manchester Evening News.
“Whenever he did score or didn’t score, the first thing he would do when we got on the team bus after the game was see if Thierry Henry scored. If Thierry Henry had scored he wouldn’t talk to anybody for the full trip home because he was so engrossed in being the leading goalscorer, not just at United but in the league, in the world, everywhere.”
“I loved the way he finished as well. Look, I played with some unbelievable centre-forwards. You are thinking Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, Solskjaer. There are loads. Van Persie I played with as well. There are some unbelievable goalscorers. But, to me, Ruud was the best, he was the best finisher.”
As Scholes notes, Van Nistelrooy is one of the most ruthless finishers the Premier League has had and we don’t feel he is given enough credit in the conversation for the best strikers to play in the league.
United’s top scorer of all-time Wayne Rooney was perhaps worthy of a mention on his list that includes the great quartet in the 1999 Treble season, but he was never actually an out and out number 9.
