talkSPORT pundit shares his opinion on Levy’s request for Pochettino wage cut

Former Chelsea and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino has had his say on reports suggesting that Daniel Levy has approached Mauricio Pochettino to take a wage cut.

A report from the Evening Standard claimed that the Argentine has been approached by Tottenham with a view to taking a cut on his reported £8.5m salary to ease financial concerns brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

In November, Pochettino and his backroom staff were dismissed after five and a half years in charge in North London following a disappointing start to the season which saw the club drop to the unfamiliar position of fourteenth in the Premier League table.

Pochettino and the rest of his backroom team are still being paid by the club as part of the severance package.

Cascarino has insisted that the 46-year-old should not accept a wage cut from his former employer but instead should donate a portion of his earnings to charity.

“If it was me and I’d already ended my relationship with the club, I would say, ‘No – I will make my own donations, thank you very much, I’ll decide what I’m going to do with my money and where it goes’,” Cascarino said on the Weekend Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT.

“Pochettino still pays tax, and people are calling for players and coaches to take a pay cut when they are already agreeing to donate money themselves.

“Tottenham are not going to go under, they’ve got a lot of funds behind them and they will always continue even through a difficult time.

“Premier League clubs are very wealthy and they can manage to run their business themselves.“
