My girlfriend has broken my heart by getting back together with her abusive ex-partner
DEAR DEIDRE: MY girlfriend has broken my heart and gone back to her abusive partner.
We work together and she was living with this guy who used to knock her about.
I’m 45 and she’s 41. We planned to be together once she was free of him.
She moved out and we started dating but he’d contact her threatening to kill himself if she didn’t go back home.
She seemed happy with me and I started making plans for her and her 18-year-old son to move in.
She then announced she wanted to try again with this guy, though all her family were against it.
He promised it would be different this time but he beat up their son last week.
Am I wasting my time? I don’t know whether to forget about her or stay as a friend.

I hope she will realise she needs to get away from this man for good, for her and her son’s sake.
Don’t pressure her yourself but urge her to find support through Women’s Aid (womensaid.org.uk), who have a Live Chat service (which can’t be overheard) and an online forum for survivors of abuse.
