Football journalist gives the low down on whether Spurs could sign free agent striker
Tottenham Hotspur are currently without a senior first-team striker at the club after Harry Kane ruptured his left hamstring tendon at the start of the new year.
The England captain had to undergo surgery, with Heung-min Son stepping up into the role of chief goalscorer in his absence.
Tottenham had the likes of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen as natural strikers last season, but the former left on a free in the summer and the latter was sold.
Besides 18-year-old Troy Parrott, Son became the best option up front for Spurs. However, the South Korean then fractured his arm in February, sidelining him for the long-term.
Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura have been holding down the fort as makeshift strikers ever since, but the goals have not been flowing for Spurs.
Football journalist, Alasdair Gold, was asked this week whether a free agent striker option would be available to Spurs. However, he quickly named a few reasons as to why this would be an extremely unlikely eventuality for Spurs.
He said (Football London): “There’s a problem with free agents.
“Firstly if they’re still free agents a month after the transfer window closed then there’s probably a reason for that.
“Also by the time you’d get a free agent signing fit enough to play in the Premier League, Harry Kane or Son would likely be back.
“Spurs are not really a quick fix club.
“They just don’t operate in that way and although a free agent could be added to a Premier League club, you could not register them for the Champions League – a minor detail I know if Tottenham crash out next month in Germany.
“I get the impression that they will continue with Lucas, Bergwijn, Lamela and Dele Alli rotating during games in the most advanced role.”
