A photo from the U.S. Senate vote Tuesday on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act appears to show Democrats exchanging a celebratory high five after the bill failed to pass.
The conservative group Grassfire noticed the exchange and shared the photo with followers this week. It shows a male senator raising his hand in a high five to a female senator. Grassfire identified both as pro-abortion Democrats but did not provide their names.
“We even saw some Pro-Death Senators HIGH-FIVING their votes in favor of infanticide. Disgusting,” the conservative group responded.
Many expressed outrage after Democrats killed the bill to protect newborns from infanticide in a 56-41 vote. Sixty votes were necessary to overcome Democrats’ filibuster. All but three Democrat senators voted no, many doing so with a thumbs down.

Janet Morana of Priests for Life said she was horrified to see such disregard for human life.
“It’s grotesque how celebratory the #Democrats look as they vote thumbs down to protect babies from the pain of a dismemberment #abortion – Have they no souls?” she responded on Twitter.
Sponsored by U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act requires that a baby born alive during an abortion must be given the same degree of medical care that any other baby born at the same gestational age would, including transportation to a hospital. It also would enforce the protections by punishing doctors who refuse to provide basic medical care to infants.
In 2018, U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer drew similar outrage when they gave each other a high five after voting against the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. The bill would have banned abortions after 20 weeks when strong scientific evidence indicates unborn babies can feel pain. Democrats voted down the 2020 version of the bill Tuesday, just as they did the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

Both bills are common-sense legislation that should have received overwhelming bipartisan support. Statistics suggest there are dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of babies who survive abortions every year in America, and thousands more unborn babies are killed every year in late-term abortions after 20 weeks.
Two recent polls from Marist and Gallup show strong public opposition to abortion on demand.
According to Marist, more than six in 10 Americans (62%) say that if the Supreme Court revisits Roe v. Wade it should allow states to determine restrictions (46%) or make abortion illegal (16%). Only 33% of Americans say Roe v. Wade should be interpreted to allow for legal abortion any time without restriction.
Gallup found that 58% of Americans are not satisfied with current abortion laws, and more want stricter laws that limit or ban abortions.
