Girl, 7, dies one minute into routine surgery to remove her tonsils
A seven year-old girl died just one minute into a routine tonsil removal operation. Paisley Cogsdill’s heart stopped shortly after the operation began at the Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, South Carolina, on February 21.
The youngster’s devastated parents Austin and Jasmine Cogsdill say Paisley was healthy, and did not have any serious medical conditions that they knew about. They are now awaiting the results of an autopsy to discover what killed Paisley, with results due on Tuesday.
Paisley’s grandma Mary Beth Truelock said: ‘You don’t understand why these things happen, but we know it was God’s plan and that’s the only thing that can get us through.’ A heartbreaking obituary described the straight-A student as having a ‘full of “joy” attitude.’
The memorial continued: ‘She enjoyed showing off her craft skills by making arts and crafts but enjoyed giving them away even more. Paisley loved being part of the activities at the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, singing and acting in the church plays and being the Angel in the Easter Pageant. Her years on earth may have only been seven, but the love she shared will last a lifetime.’
A tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on children, and is performed under general anesthesia.
The tonsil glands are filled with white blood cells that fight infections, but may be removed if they themselves become infected.
Paisley’s funeral is set to take place on Thursday, Fox Carolina reported.
A GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral expenses climbing over $30,000 by Tuesday morning.
