Paul Robinson was left far from impressed by what he saw in Chelsea v Spurs game
Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has criticised VAR in the wake of the incident involving Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso escaped punishment for what appeared to be a nasty stamp on the leg of Cesar Azpilicueta.
Referee Michael Oliver did not take any action on the pitch but the clash was reviewed by VAR for some time from multiple angles.
No further action was taken by VAR only to be shortly followed by the PGMOL admitting that VAR official David Coote had made an error and should have instead decided that the Argentine should have been shown a straight red card (BBC); instead, Lo Celso did not even receive a booking.
Robinson has been left unimpressed in the way in which the incident was managed by the officials and instead believes that referees need to utilise the pitchside monitors and made the ultimate decision their own.
“VAR is there to wipe out all errors, I think we saw another weekend that didn’t cover VAR in glory at is, it’s spoiling the game in so many ways,” Robinson told Football Insider.
“There are so many grey areas, it’s fundamentally wrong. Unfortunately for football it’s there to stay. It was a red card, it’s where you put VAR down to opinion, it’s not fact.
“This is my huge thing where I think the referee should go to the monitor on the pitch and make his own opinion of it. You’ve got two referees with two different opinions. If it was a red card, whether malicious or not it was a bad enough tackle to warrant a red card, there’s no kind of definitive line.
“Let the referee referee the football match and make his own decision.”
