Frozen 2 Honest Trailer - Thor: Ragnarok Could Sue This Disney Sequel
Disney's Frozen 2 has gotten its official Honest Trailer. The sequel to the studio's smash-hit animated musical opened last fall, exactly six years after the original Frozen took the world by storm. Directed by returning co-helmers Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Frozen 2 follows Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven on a brand-new adventure that takes them from Arendelle to the mysterious enchanted forest in the north, where they uncover secrets about the past (like what really happened to Anna and Elsa's parents). The film was unsurprisingly huge at the box office and grossed $1.45 billion worldwide. Its critical reception, however, was positive yet noticeably more mixed than the response to the first Frozen.
For their latest Honest Trailer, Screen Junkies has set their sights on Frozen 2 and the common criticisms raised against the film. In doing so, the video calls attention to the overt similarities between Disney's animated sequel and Taika Waititi's MCU adventure Thor: Ragnarok, right down to their plots about historical injustice and heroes having to reckon with the sins of their ancestors in the present-day - not to mention, an appearance by a creature (or creatures) made entirely out of rocks. Most of the Honest Trailer's jokes (from the sequel's "Bohemian Rhapsody" inspiration during Kristoff's song "Lost in the Woods" to its own nostalgia for the original Frozen) should be pretty familiar to anyone who's followed the discourse around Frozen 2. At the same time, many have applauded the sequel for being darker and more mature than its predecessor, if also messier as a whole. Similarly, Frozen 2 was certainly a whole lot better than the majority of direct to video animated sequels Disney was churning out in the 1990 and '00s, like the ones mentioned at the beginning of the Honest Trailer. It might not be as good as post-Frozen Disney animated films like Moana or even last year's Pixar followup Toy Story 4, but the Frozen sequel has its merits and was far from the empty cash grab it might've been (though, yes, it does rip off Ragnarok in more ways than one).
In Frozen 2, Queen Elsa has lifted the spell that left her kingdom in an eternal winter. When Elsa is drawn to the enchanted forest by a mysterious siren, her powers return, putting the kingdom at risk. Her sister Anna sets off with Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven to find the origin of Elsa's powers.
