Judy Blume’s ‘Summer Sisters’ Novel in Development as Hulu Limited Series
Hulu is developing a limited series based on Judy Blume’s “Summer Sisters” novel.
“Little Fires Everywhere” showrunner Liz Tigelaar is set to fill the same role for the new series, as well as write and executive produce. Blume herself will also executive produce.
The classic 1988 novel, which follows two women named Victoria “Vix” Leonard and Caitlin Somer, is known for its heavy sexual nature, which sets it apart from Blume’s usual tween-focused works like “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.”

The story is set on the quaint New England island of Martha’s Vineyard and follows the friendship of Vix and Cailtin, which starts out strong but over time runs into difficulty involving love and marriage.
This is Blume’s second book to be adapted to television, following her series revolving around the character Fudge, which started running on ABC in the 1990s. The acclaimed author has written over 30 books.
Tigelaar’s “Little Fires Everywhere” is an eight-episode limited series based on Celeste Ng’s bestselling novel of the same name. It’s set to debut on Hulu on March 18, 2020, and stars Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon.
According to Hulu, “Little Fires Everywhere” follows “the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. The story explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood — and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster.”
