Video: Pundits react to controversial decision during Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Chelsea

Andy Read, Mathew Upson, and Deon Dubin, and others have all reacted with absolute to shock to VAR’s explanation as to why Giovani Lo Celso wasn’t sent off for his challenge on Cesar Azpilicueta in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea this afternoon.

As the ball broke loose and both players went for it, replays showed that Lo Celso had landed on the Chelsea defender’s calf and stamped down on him.

VAR, however, decided that it wasn’t a clear and obvious error on the part of the referee and the Spurs midfielder was thus let off.

BBC 5 Live Sport’s panel was completely dumbstruck by VAR’s explanation of the decision that the Argentine had nowhere else to put his foot.

Spurs Web Opinion

I must admit I was completely expecting Lo Celso to receive the marching orders as the challenge looked terrible on slow-motion replay. However, it could be possible that Azpilicueta has just slid down as the Argentine was landing his foot and the midfielder had no intention of stamping down on him. Only Lo Celso knows if he meant it or not but he can certainly consider himself very lucky to escape without a red card.
