A man was arrested Wednesday July 17th, 2019 after reportedly shooting a gun, yelling at his neighbors and threatening to kill Lake County Sheriff's deputies.
At 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to the 7000 block of Marin Street in Nice after several reports from area residents claimed 59-year-old Nice man Grant Donald Smith was "yelling at neighbors and shooting a firearm," said Lt. Corey Paulich, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.
Clearlake Police Department officers and California Highway Patrol units also responded to the incident.
"When deputies arrived they heard gunshots coming from Smith's residence," said Paulich. "They made contact with Smith and ordered him out of the residence. Smith told the deputies to come in and get him."
Smith, threatening to kill the deputies, came out of his house holding a spotlight, which he was shining at the deputies, said Paulich. "Smith said he had a gun and would kill everyone if they didn't leave," Paulich continued, noting that deputies were not able to see if Smith had a gun.
Then, Paulich said, "Smith went back into his residence and refused to come out."
The sheriff's Special Weapons and Tactics team and Crisis Response Team then responded to the scene.
"The CRT made several attempts to speak with Smith and get him to surrender peacefully, but he refused. The SWAT Team used chemical agents in an attempt to get Smith to come out, but he continued to refuse. The SWAT Team eventually made entry into Smith's residence pursuant to a search warrant and took him into custody. The Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit conducted a search of Smith's residence. They located several empty .22 caliber shell casings and a .22 caliber revolver."
Smith was taken to the Lake County Jail after being medically cleared. Smith was booked for negligent discharge of a firearm and resisting an officer. As of Thursday afternoon, according to jail data, Smith was still being held on $15,000 bail.
