Hollyoaks pays tribute to originals Helen and Gordon Cunningham 16 years after their deaths
HOLLYOAKS remembered originals Helen and Gordon Cunningham last night, 16 years after their deaths.
The pair passed away from after a car accident caused by former star Milo Entwistle.
The channel 4 soap acknowledged the two former stars, with a plaque that Tom Cunningham made for his parents.
Helen may also be remembered as Mandy Richardson’s (Sarah Jayne Dunn) mum, while Gordon was Cindy’s (Stephanie Waring) dad.
The pair were two of the show’s original characters and were mainstays on the soap until they were shockingly killed off in a major car crash storyline in 2004.
It wasn’t until two years ago that Cindy’s lodger Milo was revealed as the cause of the incident, as he lost control of his van and crashed into their car, with a terrified young Tom in the back seat.
He would somewhat redeem himself as Tom would avoid suffering the same fate as his parents, as Milo saved him from getting crushed by a car.
Whilst he hasn’t appeared since then, the show has revisited the tragedy that took both of Tom’s parents.
Hollyoaks’ first-look episode on Tuesday (February 18) included a heartfelt tribute to Helen and Gordon, as Tom and sister Cindy finally unveiled their eco-friendly, carbon-neutral, sustainable market.
The village then gathered round and listened intently as the businessman gave a touching speech about his mum and dad.

“I don’t have many memories of them because I was just a kid. I’m not saying that for sympathy. You see, I’ve never really wanted anything in life thanks to my sisters, Tony, Jack and Darren.”
He added: “You made this village my home. You made it special. I could have gone off to uni, or travelled the world. But there’s just no place like home.”
The end of Tuesday’s first-look episode saw Tom approach the plaque he’d had made in honour of his parents.
He then wished: “I hope I did you proud.”
