Soldier was ‘dead in barracks for three weeks before he was discovered’

The body of a soldier was reportedly left undiscovered in a British military base for three weeks.

Lance Corporal Bernard Mongan, 33, was found dead on January 23 in his bedroom at the Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

His wife Beth claimed police believe he died several weeks earlier, on January 4, when his phone was last used, reports the Mirror.

She said: ‘What happened to Bernie is outrageous.

‘How can a soldier be dead in his room for three weeks and nobody notice?’

The case has now been passed to the Army which has launched an investigation.

The Iraq War veteran worked in military signals intelligence and helped gather information on the UK’s enemies.

Beth, 30, who was separated from L Cpl Mongan, the father of her three daughters, claims she has been ‘left in the dark by the Army’.

She alleges her ex-partner was the victim of racist bullying. She said the Bristol-born soldier had a soft southern Irish accent after growing up in the Republic of Ireland.

He was allegedly attacked by two soldiers from Northern Ireland in November 2018 after being stationed at Catterick.

An Army spokesman said: ‘The circumstances surrounding the death of a soldier in Catterick are being investigated.’

‘It would be inappropriate to comment any further.’
