Lopez sees himself taking on most feared fighters up to welterweight
Lopez has star qualities, and says he’ll look to make the fights to prove it.
With Teofimo Lopez now a lightweight world titleholder at age 22, the fighter sat down with ESPN to discuss what’s been going on in his life and how sees his future in the sport. It’s currently expected that Lopez will be lined up to unify titles with Vasiliy Lomachenko in the near future, and if he wins that fight the sky is the limit, says Lopez.
So when asked what he sees as the best scenario for this year and onward, Lopez responded:
“Beating the top dudes in the division. In every division. From 135 to 140 and unifying and becoming undisputed champion. It’s going to be a big year. Dream big and you get it done.
“After I beat Lomachenko, I’d be the undisputed world champion at 22 years of age, God willing, and then after that, somebody in the likes of Jose Ramirez or Josh Taylor at 140. Even Regis Prograis. Big names, top dudes that people probably fear. After 140, when I probably clear out that division, too, I’ll go to 147.”
Now I really can’t fault Lopez for having lofty ambitions (hey, aim really high, and even if you fall a little short you’ll still have done well for yourself). But some of these statements probably won’t ring true for a number of people. Either way, I’d rather hear a fighter openly seek out potentially intriguing matchups rather than the run-of-the-mill squash matches we so often see.
