Derek Carr on Marshawn Lynch’s return: ‘I wish it was with us.’

ALAMEDA — Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is happy to see Marshawn Lynch back in the NFL– except for one thing.

“I wish it was with us,” Carr said Tuesday. “I miss that guy, but it’s good to see him back. … I love Marshawn.”

Lynch, 33, spent two seasons with the Raiders, joining his hometown team after five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. Now he’s back with the Seahawks, coming out of retirement this week to play Sunday for the NFC West title against the 49ers. Lynch hasn’t played since October 2018 when he sustained a groin injury that kept him out the rest of the year. He’s spent much of this season around the Bay Area, manning his Beast Mode store in Old Oakland.

The morning of the Raiders’ last game at the Oakland Coliseum, Lynch was in the parking lot handing out tequila shots — and checking IDs — to celebrate and mourn the team’s departure for Las Vegas.

That appearance came three days after Lynch had visited the Seahawks in the wake of Rashaad Penny’s injury. The team was required to report the visit because Lynch had not actually filed retirement paperwork with the NFL. Sunday, the Seahawks lost two more running backs, including starter Chris Carson.

Of Lynch, Carr said: “He’s been working really hard to get ready, just in case… I didn’t know he was going to come back and play football, talking to him. But he’s back, and that’s a good thing for football.”

In his two seasons with the Raiders, Lynch made a lasting impression on running back DeAndre Washington.

“Just watching the man, watching how he moved, how he went about his business on — and mostly off — the field, I watched how he carried the load,” Washington said. “He was back in his hometown, had a lot of things pulling him from different directions, but he was able to manage everything, and still stay true to himself.”

“His imprint is left on this building,” Carr said. “That’s for sure.”
