Kansas takes over No. 1 ranking in AP poll

The Kansas Jayhawks are the latest team to top the AP poll this season, after receiving 47 of 65 first-place votes.
The Jayhawks (9-1) have won nine straight games since falling to Duke in the Champions Classic to open the season. Kansas has three wins over top-45 KenPom teams, including a 90-84 win over Dayton in the Maui Invitational and a 72-58 victory over Colorado.
Kansas is the fifth team this season to hold the No. 1 ranking. It is the first time the AP poll has had five different No. 1’s before New Year’s Day; the record for an entire season is seven, set in 1982-83.
Gonzaga (11-1) jumped four spots to the No. 2 ranking, earning 15 first-place votes. Last week’s No. 1 Louisville fell to third after losing to Texas Tech. Duke rose three spots to fourth, followed by Ohio State falling two spots to No. 5 after a loss at Minnesota.
Kentucky, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia and Baylor round out the top 10.
North Carolina (6-4) is out of the AP poll for the first time in nearly six years. The Tar Heels fell to Wofford on Sunday, giving them their third straight loss with a matchup at Gonzaga set for Wednesday.
Seton Hall also dropped out of the poll after back-to-back losses at Iowa State and rival Rutgers.
