FSG Take Next Step in Anfield Road Expansion with Public Consulations

Liverpool’s owners look to build on the success of the Main Stand expansion, with a view toward boosting capacity to over 60,000.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), took some time before fully gaining the trust of supporters. Some misguided souls still aren’t there. Regardless, they took a major step in the right direction—and one with long-lasting positive consequences—with the expansion and renovation of Anfield’s Main Stand.

At the time, the expansion of the Main Stand was thought to be the first of two expansions, raising total capacity from roughly 45,000 to around 58,000. Despite the Main Stand being seen as a success, FSG initially cooled on the subsequent Anfield Road Stand expansion.

A few months ago, we found out that FSG decided to scrap those original plans, not to halt expansion, but rather to add even more seats. The new stated goal from FSG was to increase capacity to over 60,000.

Although most Liverpool fans—many of whom have found getting tickets difficult, especially with the recent success—supported the move, some locals raised concerns. As such, FSG are holding a series of public consultations in order to answer questions, and hopefully to allay fears.

Like with the Main Stand expansion, and new Kirkby training facility, it’s a sign that the ownership group are making long-term investments into the club, ones that will likely out-last their stewardship of this storied club. And by making the effort to engage the public, they also at least appear to be trying to do so in the right manner.
