Composer Alberto Iglesias (‘Pain and Glory’): ‘Putting music in difficult places to tell the truth’ [EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW]
“What makes him very, very special is the way he loves music,” reveals composer Alberto Iglesias about working with acclaimed filmmaker Pedro Almodovar on their eleventh collaboration with his latest, “Pain and Glory.” “We have a past together, putting music in the most difficult places to tell the truth,” Iglesias says, adding that “the music has to be truth, it has to be true.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Iglesias above.
“Pain and Glory” stars Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, reunited with director Almodovar in his new semi-autobiographical film about a filmmaker played by Banderas, reflecting on his life and the choices he’s made both past and present. It’s a deeply personal film from the Spanish maestro centering on familiar themes of love, loss, desire and regret. With “Pain and Glory”,” Iglesias returns to the Almodovar fold for the eleventh time, after creating some of the most memorable scores of his career to date for the auteur, including “All About My Mother” (1999), “Talk to Her” (2002), “Bad Education (2004), “Volver (2006), “Broken Embraces” (2009), “The Skin I Live In” (2011) and “Julieta” (2016).
The composer also has three Oscar nominations under his belt (for “The Constant Gardner” (2005), “The Kite Runner” (2007, for which he was also nominated at the Golden Globes) and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011). This year, Iglesias won the Best Soundtrack award at the Cannes Film Festival for his latest work, while the film itself continues to build steam this awards season, including as Spain’s official submission for the Best International Feature at the Oscars.
“This is I think one of his most important films,” declares Iglesias. “Even though this is our eleventh collaboration, I felt that this one was a little different as it was asking me more questions, more difficult questions,” he says. “I had Pedro beside me through the whole process, helping me and opening me to new possibilities.”
