I may need routine dialysis: PM

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli today said he was facing some health complications and that he might have to undergo haemodialysis regularly.

Briefing about his health condition at a meeting of Nepal Communist Party Central Secretariat this morning, Oli said he underwent haemodialysis twice on Wednesday and Thursday as his kidneys were not working properly, resulting in fluid build-up in his body.

Oli said he needed a third round of dialysis either today or tomorrow, according to a member of the NCP secretariat who was present at today’s meeting. “Oli said his doctors would decide whether to go for routine dialysis or another transplant surgery after reports of all his medical tests came out,” the NCP secretariat member said.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, NCP Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the prime minister briefed that he was not seriously ill but was facing some complications. “The PM said doctors would take a decision on the future course of action after his medical test reports came out,” said Shrestha. “As of now, his health is normal and he is resting.”

Oli had undergone a kidney transplant surgery 12 years ago. He has been visiting various hospitals in foreign countries for health check-up ever since. Oli was admitted to Singapore-based National University Hospital twice in August. He had undergone plasmapheresis in NUH after his blood creatinine level rose.

Creatinine is a waste product produced by the body that is filtered and released into urine by the kidneys. Increased
creatinine level in blood may mean that kidneys are not working as they should.

Prime Minister Oli was admitted to Grande International Hospital on Wednesday where he underwent two rounds of haemodialysis before being discharged on Thursday evening. The hospital said dialysis was conducted to lower the increased level of creatinine in his blood.

The hospital did not reveal details of his medical tests urging all to respect the patient’s privacy. Both the hospital and
Oli’s secretariat had not revealed that he had undergone dialysis on Wednesday. It was only yesterday, after much pressure that the hospital officially revealed the PM had undergone dialysis.

Haemodialysis is a process of purifying the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally. In dialysis, waste products such as creatinine, urea and fluid are removed from the blood using a dialysis machine.
