Berchelt destroys Sosa to retain WBC title
The super featherweight titleholder bashed through another challenger.
Jason Sosa has long been known as a tough contender, and at one point he held a secondary world title at 130 pounds. But for the most part, he’s been overmatched in high-level fights, and that continued tonight, as Miguel Berchelt smashing him out inside of four rounds on ESPN.
Berchelt (37-1, 33 KO) dropped Sosa (23-4-4, 16 KO) hard in the second round, but Sosa was able to get out of the round and push through the third.
In the fourth, though, Berchelt opened back up again, ripping Sosa to the body repeatedly. Sosa went down on a brutal hook to the body. Sosa got up, as he does, and tried to fight on, rushing at Berchelt, but there was really nothing he could do.
Berchelt landed a couple more vicious body shots, buckling Sosa’s knees a bit, but again, the challenger stayed up. His corner, however, had seen enough, calling the fight late in the fourth round as it was clear their man was simply outgunned.
For Berchelt, it’s another good win to wrap up 2019, and he moves into 2020 as the pretty clear top 130-pound fighter in the world.
In the ESPN co-feature, which was bumped to the main card late in the week when Jerwin Ancajas vs Jonathan Rodriguez was canceled, Javier Molina (21-2, 9 KO) stopped Hiroki Okada (19-2, 13 KO) in the first round, after two knockdowns. Official time was 1:05. Molina beating Okada is no big surprise, but the method of victory is a bit of one, as Molina is not usually an aggressive guy or a huge puncher.
