Lewis Capaldi (‘Someone You Loved’) continues the trend of first-timers topping the Billboard charts
After gradually climbing up the charts for weeks, the breakup ballad “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi has finally reached the summit, claiming the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the chart dated November 2. It took 24 weeks for him to get there, which marks the fifth-longest ascent before finally coming out on top. And it’s Capaldi’s first chart-topper, which continues the 2019 trend of newcomers taking the lead. Watch Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” video above.
Capaldi knocked Lizzo‘s “Truth Hurts” out of the number-one slot after that song had spent seven nonconsecutive weeks at the head of the pack. That was Lizzo’s first song to reach the top as well. And that’s far from the only example of a Billboard breakthrough this year. The very first chart of the calendar year was topped by the seventh week of Ariana Grande‘s “Thank U, Next,” which was her first number-one hit. Then Halsey‘s “Without Me” became her first number-one song as a lead artist (she was previously featured on The Chainsmokers‘ “Closer”).
Also marking their first number-one singles were Bradley Cooper (“Shallow” with Lady Gaga), the Jonas Brothers (“Sucker”), Billie Eilish (“Bad Guy”) and Shawn Mendes (“Senorita” with Camila Cabello). And lest we forget, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus not only had their first number-one hit with “Old Town Road,” it set a new record for the longest running number-one hit in history, spending 19 weeks on top and exceeding the previous benchmark of 16 weeks set by “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber.
The only songs that have hit number-one this year that weren’t someone’s first were “Sunflower” (by Post Malone and Swae Lee), “7 Rings” (Grande’s second career number-one) and “Highest in the Room” (by Travis Scott).
