Court acquits former MPs of monarch’s slander
KUWAIT: The court of cassation yesterday acquitted former MPs Musallam Al-Barrak, Mubarak Al-Waalan, and Salem Al-Namlan, as well as activist Abbas the Shaabi from accusations of slandering King Abdullah II of Jordan. Meanwhile, the court of appeal yesterday upheld a first degree court ruling which acquitted all 32 Public Authority for Sports employees and others who had been accused of facilitating embezzlement of public funds in the Jaber Stadium’s tender case. Separately, the administrative court yesterday rejected a case demanding suspension of moving Kuwait University into the new campus in Shedadiya.
MEW staff protest
Once more, scores of Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) employees demonstrated yesterday at MEW quarters in protest of cancelling their emergency services allowance. Protestors demanded equality with other colleagues especially since the newly appointed ones were deprived of the allowance for no particular reason, according to their statements.
Cleaning contracts
Municipal Council member Maha Al-Baghli yesterday filed a number of inquiries concerning cleaning contracts, noting that a large numbers of citizens and expats had been complaining about garbage collection in various areas around Kuwait. Baghli stressed that cleaning companies failed in providing the services they had been contracted for, and that the municipality’s control on those companies was ‘very weak.’ In her inquires, Baghli demanded answers to questions about who is responsible for the service deterioration, the value of the current contracts, on what grounds are cleaning companies selected, the penal conditions in those contracts and the violations filed against cleaning companies, if any.
