Up until the past couple of weeks, I had hoped that the Tottenham careers of a number of long-term players were still salvageable.
Unfortunately, whatever problems that lie in the Spurs camp, they do not seem to be changing. Unlike some Tottenham fans, I do not believe that sacking Pochettino is the answer.
Although he has made plenty of mistakes over the past year, I have seen him actively make changes on the pitch and stick up for his senior stars. Meanwhile, the vast majority of them have not repaid him with full effort and quality on the pitch.
Therefore, the only answer that I can see is a mass clearout over the next two transfer windows, with seven senior players set for the chop.
Christian Eriksen – Eriksen looks set to let his contract run down, although I hope he can be sold in January to at least recoup some money.
Toby Alderweireld – While I was praying for a new contract, his performances this season have not even justified one.
Jan Vertonghen – The same issue as Alderweireld, it appears that Vertonghen is past his best.
Serge Aurier – A walking mistake who always threatens to cost Tottenham at the worst moments. Not good enough at the back or going forward.
Danny Rose – A beloved player but Danny seems to have lost a step over the past two seasons. He will always be one of my favourites, but perhaps he is no longer first-team quality.
Eric Dier – I am not sure that Dier has been good enough for a few seasons now. Although he is a good utility player, I would rather see him sold and the money invested into someone new.
Victor Wanyama – He has fallen well down the pecking order and I can’t see him breaking back into the team as a regular any time soon.
These players have a few months to prove me wrong, and I hope they do, but at the moment I would see them as the most likely exits over the next year.
