JERMELL CHARLO will pay for the funeral of boxer Patrick Day who tragically died after injuries sustained in the ring.
American super-welterweight Day was knocked out by Charles Conwell in the tenth-round of their bout in Chicago on October 11.
He was rushed to hospital on a stretcher after he faced a barrage of punches from Conwell and did not move on the canvas for several minutes.
Poor Day suffered seizures on his way to Northwester Memorial Hospital and had emergency brain surgery before remaining in a coma.
Veteran DiBella set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for Day’s funeral with £11,500 raised.
But according to Fightnights WBC middleweight world champion Charlo has decided to pay for the whole thing.
Ring legend Floyd Mayweather paid for the funeral of former super-lightweight world champion and ex-opponent Genaro Hernandez in 2011, after he died of cancer.
British promoter Eddie Hearn was left in tears during an interview with iFL TV as he described meeting an enthusiastic and ambitious Day on the week of the bout.
It marked the fourth death in boxing this year.
Russian Maxim Dadashev, Argentina’s Hugo Santillan and Bulgaria’s Boris Stanchov all passed in 2019.
