Notable San Francisco: 10/16–10/22

Wednesday 10/16: The Litquake festival continues! Notable SF will only feature on Litquake event per day, but you can find a list of all the events here.

As part of City Arts and Lectures, Zadie Smith will be discussing Grand Union, her debut collection of short stories. Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco at 7:30 p.m. ($29–$49, tickets required).

Litquake: Tope Folarin will be discussing his debut novel, A Particular Kind of Black Man. He will be in conversation with Sarah Ladipo Manyika (Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun). Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday 10/17: NPR correspondent Aarti Namdev Shahani will be discussing her new memoir, Here We Are: American Dreams, American Nightmares. Books Inc. in Mountain View at 7 p.m.

Ann Patchett will be reading from her new novel, The Dutch House. Danville Congregational Church in Danville at 7 p.m. ($31, tickets required).

Litquake: Lewis Hyde will be discussing A Primer for Forgetting: Getting Past the Past alongside poets Jane Hirshfield and Margaret Gibson, as well as UCSF neuroscientists Aimee Kao, Joel Kramer, Bruce Miller, and Virginia Sturm. Genentech Hall (UCSF) in San Francisco at 6 p.m.

Friday 10/18: Caren Beilin will be launching Blackfishing the IUD. She will be joined for a reading by Amy Berkowitz (Tender Points). E.M. Wolfman Bookstore in Oakland at 7 p.m.

Richard Powers will be reading from The Overstory. Copperfield’s Books in Petaluma at 7 p.m.

Litquake: Join Jennifer S. Cheng, Jayinee Basu, Sagaree Jain, Celeste Chan, Christine No, Lisa Kee Hamasaki, Jen Soong, and Angie Sijun Lou for Kearney Street Workshop’s APAture literary arts showcase. Arc Studios & Gallery in San Francisco at 7 p.m. ($10–$30, tickets required).

Saturday 10/19: The Litquake festival culminates with the Lit Crawl! The Lit Crawl features over one hundred events. Notable SF will only feature one Lit Crawl event per session, but the full schedule can be found here.

Lit Crawl Phase 1: Join Jenny Xie, Carson Ash Beker, Tomas Moniz, Marco Lean, and Maddy Raskulinecz for a reading with Joyland Magazine. Craftsman and Wolves in San Francisco at 6 p.m.

Lit Crawl Phase 2: Potluck Club, a group of women writers of color, will be discussing the relationship between home and diaspora. Join Grace Hwang Lynch, Melissa Hung, Sabina Khan-Ibarra, Shikha Saklani Malaviya, Michelle Villegas Threadgould, Jennifer Ng, and Jenn Chen for readings. This event will be hosted by Minyoung Lee. Wabi Sabi Beauty in San Francisco at 6:30 p.m.

Lit Crawl Phase 3: Christine H. Lee hosts a night of Rumpus readings at Lit Crawl, featuring sam sax, Lizz Huerta, Thea Matthews, and Breuana L. Roach and with comedy by Nato Green! The Chapel in San Francisco at 8 p.m.

Monday 10/21: Stephanie Jimenez will be reading from They Could Have Named Her Anything. Stephanie will be in conversation with Devi Laskar (The Atlas of Reds and Blues). The Ruby in San Francisco at 6 p.m. ($0–$25, tickets required).

Tuesday 10/22: Mimi Lok will be reading from her debut story collection, Last of Her Name. She’ll be joined in conversation by Rita Bullwinkel (Belly Up). The Bindery in San Francisco at 7:30 p.m.

Don’t miss this week’s Local Book Pick event! Beth Piatote will be reading from The Beadworkers, her debut collection of short stories. The event will feature refreshments by Cafe Ohlone. University Press Books in Berkeley at 5:30 p.m.
