BORIS Johnson should boot out the US ambassador over the Harry Dunn crash row, a former British envoy has declared.
Sir Ivor Roberts, who served as the UK’s representative in Yugoslavia, Ireland and Italy, has called on Woody Johnson to quit following the uproar.
Harry Dunn, 19, was killed when the wife of a US diplomat’s car was believed to have crashed into him outside an RAF base in August.
Anne Sacoolas has since fled back to the US and pleaded diplomatic immunity, and despite Boris Johnson’s personal pleas, America has insisted she won’t be coming back to face justice.
The family have vowed to fight on for answers for their son.
This morning Sir Ivor insisted Woody Johnson should go over his role in the saga, which has soured relations between Britain and the US.
In an article for Politico he wrote: “The U.K. government could more formally do what Trump did less formally and torpedo the diplomatic mission of the ambassador by explicitly stating that he was no longer welcome.
“If the U.S. ambassador in the U.K. played any part in the disreputable flight of Sacoolas it would be entirely reasonable and proportionate to announce that the U.K. government would no longer work with the ambassador and leave him to draw the necessary conclusions.”
He would be “failing to do his job” if he knew about her fleeing the US – or if he had no idea she had gone, he argued.
“It cannot be business as usual with the US embassy if they decline to assist the enquiry by allowing Sacoolas to be interviewed,” he stormed.
“An honourable ambassador should do the honourable thing and go.”
Harry’s parents Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn have pleaded with Mrs Sacoolas to come back and face justice, who is set to be charged over the crash.
They were furious after a meeting with Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab earlier this week.
Harry’s mum has said they would be prepared to go to the US to fight for their son.
