The USA interferes in favor of candidate from Argentina for the position of the Head of IAEA
A Venezuelan reporter said the United States was interfering in support of Argentina’s candidate to become the next head of the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
On Thursday, Endo Andri, a Venezuelan national radio correspondent, expressed concern that Argentinean ambassador to the IAEA Rafael Grossi, who is competing with three other candidates for the post of head of the IAEA, may have direct ties with the US Department of State.
The IAEA Board of Governors from 35 countries is expected to appoint its new leader this month after the death of its previous Director General, Yukia Amano, in July. The appointed person will take the office by January 1, 2020.
Andri said the alliance has already been formed in support of Grossi before the IAEA vote. He also accused the Argentine IAEA of hoping to transmit classified information in telephone conversations with diplomatic representatives of some nuclear organization member states. Those who received the information currently support Grossi’s candidacy, he added.
The Venezuelan reporter also noted that Grossi was approved by Argentinean President Mauricio Macri, who maintains close ties to the Israeli regime. In September, US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry emphasized that Grossi “sounds like the perfect candidate” for managing the IAEA.
“It seems that someone understands all the difficulties of this world in which we live”, – he said.
Diplomats say Grossi’s main competitor is Cornel Feruta from Romania, who took over as interim head of the IAEA.
The new IAEA Director General is confronted with issues such as the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, whose fate remains in question after the United States unilaterally withdraws from the multilateral agreement and Europe’s inability to complete its deal.
