They say you often don’t realise what you have until you lose it. That sentiment accurately captures the feelings some Spurs fans are currently having towards Eric Dier.
The 25-year-old, who was brought in from Sporting Lisbon as a centre back, was converted into a defensive midfielder by Mauricio Pochettino and went on to establish himself as an important player in the side.
The England international was a vital reason that Tottenham excelled as a defensive unit particularly in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 season.
However, he has ended up losing his place in the side in the past couple of seasons partly due to his injury problems and partly down to the emergence of other players like Harry Winks.
With Spurs signing Tanguy Ndombele in the summer, Dier has now seemingly slipped even further down the pecking order at Tottenham.
However, after the 7-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich, some Spurs fans took to social media to call for Pochettino to reinstate Dier back into the team in order to add more solidity to the midfield.
Can the Serge Aurier love-in please end and can the Eric Dier love-in please restart. #THFC #COYS #TOTBAY #iloveericdier

Think Eric dier is the answer to be honest. We simply need more protection in midfield. Good going forward but cut through so easily

I know there’s many people who aren’t keen on Eric Dier. But he does a job nobody else in our squad can do, someone who wants to play, not Wanyama who will be sold. Stick him in the team, go back to basics, 4-2-3-1. Stick Winks/Sissoko with Dier and let him protect the back 4.

So to go back to my one post-match tweet, the only thing I had to say was Eric Dier. Just to make it clear I've been saying it all season. He looked fit enough post Colchester so for me no excuse if he doesn't start on Saturday.

When Eric Dier was sat in front of Toby and Jan we were at our best defensively. Why we've gone away from that when all 3 are still at the club is beyond me. Wanyama got greedy, and the contracts are down to Levy. I want to see lo Celso and Sessegnon play too.

Missing Eric Dier or Victor Wanyama to sweep in front of back 4. Love Winksy but doesn’t have the same bite. #thfc

I see more Eric Dier in our future..

Eric Dier is the answer to all our midfield problems. Get steady Eddie Ben Davies back on the left and shore that side up. Get young foyth in on the right and make us solid again. Then build from there.

Ok, we were gubbed but still a great experience to see Spurs at home in the Champions League. One for the Bucket list. We were world class for 40 minutes but bottom of the class for 50. Bring back Eric Dier!! pic.twitter.com/DG7gejrVfb

Spurs Web Opinion
Playing Eric Dier allowed Tottenham the luxury of seamlessly switching formations during games as the 25-year-old was adept at dropping into the backline to make it a back three, while also being competent enough with the ball to step into midfield. However, Pochettino seems to have completely deserted the back three nowadays, which is probably why the former Sporting man has seen his starts dwindle. Even if Pochettino is determined to persist with a diamond in midfield, I believe the team will be much more solid with Dier sweeping up in front of the back four.
