The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on September 26 that it had eliminated Abu Omar al-Suri, a prominent commander of ISIS cells in northeastern Syria.
In an official statement, the U.S.-backed group said that the terrorist was killed during a raid in the town of al-Ruz in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
“Abu Omar Al-Suri is considered to be the mastermind responsible for the supply of explosives and the work of ISIS cells, he was on his way back from a meeting, planning new attacks in the area,” the statement, which was released by the SDF’s media center, reads.
The SDF claimsthat northeastern Syria sohlud witness a decrease of ISIS activity in the upcoming period becase of the elimination of al-Suri.
In the last few months, the SDF stepped up its security operations in an effort to counter the growing influence of ISIS. Last week, the group’s security forces killed the son of a prominent tribesman during such an operation.
