Tom Hanks’ ‘News of the World’ Gets Christmas 2020 Release Date
Tom Hanks’ “News of the World” will hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2020, Universal Pictures announced Wednesday.
“News of the World” is written and directed by Paul Greengrass, who is reunited with Hanks for the first time since their 2013 Best Picture nominee “Captain Phillips.”
The film follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks), who five years after the end of the Civil War moves from town-to-town as a non-fiction storyteller, telling the news of presidents, queens, feuds and catastrophes. However, in Texas, he meets 10-year-old Johanna who was taken by the Kiowa tribe years ago and is now being returned to her aunt. Kidd agrees to deliver the child, and on their journey, they face human and natural challenges.

“News of the World” is based on the National Book Award finalist and best-selling novel by Paulette Jiles. Luke Davies wrote an earlier script of the movie. Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing for their company Playtone Productions, while Gregory Goodman and Gail Mutrux are producing for her Pretty Pictures. Steven Shareshian and Tore Schmidt and executive producing.
Hanks most recently starred in “The Post” and reprised his voice role of Woody in “Toy Story 4.” He will next be seen in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “Greyhound.” He is represented by 42West and CAA.
Greengrass most recently served as director, producer and writer on “Jason Bourne” and “22 July.”He is also represented by CAA and 42West.
