Boris Johnson slams justice system for ‘outrageous’ way it supports criminals more than victims

BORIS Johnson slams the justice system for the “outrageous” way it supports criminals more than their victims.

Unleashing a stinging attack, the PM says too often victims are discarded after court cases after being told: “Thanks, now you’re on your own”.

Writing for The Sun, Mr Johnson pledges a major overhaul to ensure the innocent who suffer from crime come first.

Boris insists: “The criminal justice system is built entirely around dealing with the perpetrator.

“Victims are relegated to the role of passive passengers rather than individuals with a sizeable stake in the process.

“It is frankly outrageous that we are so much better at providing long-term support to criminals than to their victims”.

‘FRANKLY OUTRAGEOUS’

The PM adds: “Rather than extending your ordeal, the state should do everything its power to support you, so that you can begin to overcome the trauma you have experienced.”

The plight of victims is a cause close to Boris’s heart, with his girlfriend Carrie Symonds among those targeted by notorious black cab rapist John Worboys.

Worboys was recommended for early release from jail, until a massive public backlash forced the decision to be overturned.

In a first step to redress the balance in favour of victims, Mr Johnson reveals he has fast tracked the appointment of the nation’s first Domestic Abuse Commissioner.

The inaugural holder of the new office is named as charity boss Nicole Jacobs, who will champion how better to help those who suffer from hidden tyranny at home.

The move is another big victory for The Sun’s Give Me Shelter campaign.

The Justice Ministry also announces £5million more to bolster specialist support services for victims of rape and sexual assault.

A review of sentencing for sexual and violent crimes will also report back soon and is expected to see dangerous offenders locked up for longer.

‘ABSOLUTELY DETERMINED’

Earlier this week, 14 fresh offences such as child sex abuse were added to a scheme that allows victims to appeal lenient sentences.

Boris also heaped praise on The Sun’s campaigns for victims in his article, saying that “The Sun has always been on the side of those who suffer at the hands of criminals”.

He adds: “Just look at its work with Sara Payne and Shy Keenan, and the powerful Give Me Shelter campaign to support survivors of domestic violence.

“But if you or a loved one has fallen victim to a serious crime, you shouldn’t have to only rely on a newspaper to stand up and speak for you.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel also heralded the appointment of Nicole Jacob, CEO of the Standing Together charity.

Dubbing her “a voice for those who need it most”, Ms Patel added: “Domestic abuse is unacceptable, and I am absolutely determined to do all I can to make to protect victims and their families and ensure perpetrators face tough action.”
