Opinion: Positive signs as Spurs back to their best without any new signings

Tottenham Hotspur were back to their rip-roaring best against Crystal Palace in the Premier League today.

It seemed fitting that Spurs’ best game of the season so far would come in a repeat fixture of the game that opened the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

For the first time in the new campaign, Spurs came out of the blocks at full pace and resumed their high-press no-nonsense style of play.

I was worried that Pochettino had decided to change tactics completely this season for some reason, but it seemed to be normal service resumed in the North London sun today.

Not one player out on that pitch today was a passenger, which can’t be said for any of Spurs’ other four games this year. From front to back, every player out there was fully committed to the win.

What seems strange is that this impressive victory came in the midst of an injury crisis for Pochettino, with none of his four new signings making the starting XI.

With Jack Clarke out on loan, Lo Celso injured, and Sessegnon still recovering, only Tanguy Ndombele made the bench against Palace.

This goes some way to highlighting the improved strength and depth they have this season.

Let’s hope this is just the start of things to come for Spurs at the start of a busy fixture list.
