Sports briefs: Former Tam standout sees Champions League action

Former Tam High soccer standout Isabella Amyx came on as a substitute for FC Lugano against Manchester City in the first game for both teams in the Women’s Champions League on Thursday. Amyx, who just began playing professionally in the Swiss Super League after playing collegiately for Sonoma State, entered the game in the 54th minute.

The game was an historic occasion for FC Lugano, hosting its first Champions League game after qualifying for the competition for the first time. FC Lugano trailed just 1-0 at the break before heavily favored City netted six times in the second half. FC Lugano qualified for Champions League after finishing second in the Swiss Super League last season.

Prep football

Andre Lopez ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns as Drake bounced back from a pair of losses with a 40-8 win against Albany. Lopez also had a pick six. Nic Migliore and John Warne also had picks for Drake (2-2).

  • Jonaven Hill scored a late touchdown to lift Novato to a 41-34 win against El Camino. Myles Gibson had a long touchdown run and a touchdown catch for the Hornets (3-1) while quarterback Kevin Hall threw two touchdowns and ran for one more.

Girls volleyball

Ramona Dewane and Drew Stimson combined to put up 22 kills and four blocks as Marin Academy picked up a 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 win against Convent. Cass Kostelnik added five kills and five blocks for the Wildcats (6-4, 2-1 BCL West).

  • Drake and Terra Linda went back and forth in a non-league contest on Friday, with the Pirates eventually emerging victorious, 23-25, 25-15, 13-25, 25-21, 15-7.

Women’s volleyball

Tiffany Wong led Dominican in kills in both games as the Penguins were swept by Concordia and San Francisco State on the first day of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase at San Francisco State. Wong had nine kills in the first match against Concordia then had five more against the Gators.

The Penguins (0-2) continue play in the tournament on Saturday against Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Sailing

Eight of the 24 boats in the J105 fleet in the 55th Rolex Big Boat Series are from Marin and through two races, one of them — Blackhawk, skippered by Sausalito’s Ryan Simmons — is sitting in first place. Blackhawk finished second in Race 1 and first in Race 2 to take the overall lead. Ne*Ne, skipped by Novato’s Tim Russell, sits in second.

Pickled Herring, skippered by Belvedere’s Tom Kassberg, sits in third place through two days in the J70 fleet.

Girls tennis

Vanessa Comins picked up a win at No. 1 singles to lead Redwood to a 7-0 win against Windsor on Wednesday. The Giants (3-1) also got singles wins from Charlotte Estus, Pia Ong Bamola and Isabella Derango Kraus.

Women’s soccer

College of Marin (0-4-0) ran into a buzz saw on Friday, falling behind big early in an eventual 9-0 loss to Cosumnes River, which led 7-0 at the half.
