Ikea faces backlash after getting jerk chicken with ‘rice and peas’ dish very wrong
FLATPACK furniture giant Ikea is feeling the heat from customers after a picture of its “disrespectful” jerk chicken with rice and peas dish went viral.
The Swedish furniture company has made a massive error in its recreation of the classic Caribbean dish by using peas instead of kidney beans with rice.
After one customer posted a picture of their meal the retailer has faced backlash for its interpretation of the dish from furious social media users.
One said: “…rice and peas is killing my soul”, while another added: “most disrespectful pea placement I’ve ever seen”.
Other unhappy fans have tweeted a picture of an advert of the dish which has appeared on billboards across the UK.
The company has now apologised and is promising to the look at the recipe.
The meal is served in Ikea’s cafe and costs £6.95 for half a chicken or £4.95 for a quarter.
It isn’t the first time that a brand has come under fire for getting rice and peas wrong.

Celeb chef Jamie Oliver was famously slammed for his version of instant “jerk rice” last August.
Rice and peas served with jerk chicken is usually cooked with kidney beans, coconut milk, spring onions, garlic and thyme, although recipes do vary.

“We take inspiration from many countries around the world and have always worked to combine different flavours and ingredients to offer delicious, healthy and affordable dishes.
“We’re aware that our new jerk chicken, served with rice and peas has created some conversation and in some cases offence.
“Our intention was to create a dish for many people to enjoy but we appreciate that we may have got it wrong. We apologise and we are now relooking at the dish.”
Last year, it was revealed that Ikea’s famous Swedish meatballs are actually made in Turkey.
