John Bercow blasted for using Michael Gove’s children in personal attack on MP

JOHN Bercow was blasted tonight for using Michael Gove’s children in a scathing personal attack on the MP.

The divisive Commons speaker ranted at Cabinet minister Mr Gove about his behaviour at the school gates.

He fumed: “I say to the Chancellor of the Duchy, that when he turns up at our school as a parent, he’s a very well-behaved fellow.

“He wouldn’t dare behave like that in front of [the school] and neither would I.”

Red-faced Bercow, 56, croaked: “Don’t gesticulate, don’t rant, spare us the theatrics, behave yourself.”

He then screamed: “Be a good boy young man – be a good boy.”

‘RANTIC LIKE A LUNATIC’

Onlookers described Bercow as “losing the plot” and “ranting like a lunatic” at Mr Gove – the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

The Spectator’s Isabel Hardman tweeted: “Bercow really covering himself in glory here, scolding Michael Gove by talking about what he’s like at the school gate where their kids are educated.”

TV presenter Kirsty Allsopp replied: “Not sure I think it was fair, I think children related stuff is off limits.”

And Tim Shipman of The Sunday Times wrote: “Bercow losing the plot, ranting like a lunatic at Gove.”

NIGHT OF DRAMA

It came as Boris Johnson’s Government was defeated by a Remainer rebel alliance of MPs demanding “No Deal” Brexit is taken off the table.

The unprecedented night of drama in Parliament plunged Westminster into outright chaos and now makes the prospect of a snap election a near-certainty.

Number 10 has argued that only the prospect of a No Deal on October 31 will force EU negotiators to give Britain what it needs.

As many as 21 Tory rebels – including NINE ex-Cabinet ministers – dramatically defied the whip to join opposition MPs in supporting a bid to take control of the Commons agenda.

They plan to pass legislation that would prevent the possibility of No Deal after MPs voted by 328 votes to 301 – a majority of 27.

The move would require the Prime Minister to seek a delay to Brexit until January 31 2020 if no agreement has been reached.

The alliance insisted the move was vital to halt the threat of a calamitous exit without an agreement in just eight weeks time.

Bercow gave the green light for the cross-party alliance to launch their coup on Tuesday to seize control of the House’s business for the following day.

Boris earlier signalled he would try to call a snap general election if he was defeated – having vowed to deselect Tory rebels who betrayed him.

He will bank his premiership and the future of Brexit on hopes of an election landslide to pack parliament with fervent Brexit-backers.

Boris has said the legislation removing the No Deal option would “destroy any chance” of negotiating an agreement.

It came after the PM’s working majority in the Commons was wiped out when former minister Phillip Lee defected to the Liberal Democrats.
