A police officer suffered a collapsed lung after being stabbed by a drug dealer.

Michael Enzanga repeatedly stabbed PC Russell Turner, 56, on February 21 at Stamshaw Park in Portsmouth.

PC Turner and PC Claire Parry, who were in plainclothes, had approached Enzanga, then aged 19, near an adventure playground in the city.

But the suspect immediately tried to run when they identified themselves as police officers and a scuffle broke out.

PC Parry said the defendant was like a ‘caged animal fighting for his life’ when he attacked PC Turner.

She added Enzanga, 20, seemed to do the punching action ‘several times’ and ‘from what I could see of Russ he was stabbed at least twice’.

PC Turner said the thuds to his body from the ‘6in black-handled knife’ seemed like ‘what I imagine someone like Mike Tyson banging and hitting me hard in the back’.

Enzanga, who was filmed after he fled the scene, was arrested after being found hiding under a tarpaulin in a back garden.

A carrier bag containing 60 wraps of crack cocaine or heroin was left at the fight scene and police later recovered a silver kitchen knife, the jury was told.

Enzanga was also found to be in possession of nearly £1,000.

A jury at Portsmouth Crown Court took one hour today to find Enzanga, from Tottenham, north London, guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife.

He was also convicted of four charges of possessing crack cocaine and diamorphine, with intent to supply the class A drugs on February 20 and 21, and a charge of possessing criminal property, namely a stash of money.

Enzanga, who denied the charges and wore a grey jumper in the dock, lowered his head briefly as the verdict was read out.

He was homeless and sleeping in the park at the time of the incident.

Judge Roger Hetherington told the defendant a pre-sentence report was required and it would ‘consider how dangerous you are’.

Enzanga was remanded in custody for sentencing on October 4.

He has previous convictions for possession of a blade and handling of class A drugs.
