‘Murderer killed his new cellmate hours after asking to move in with him’

An accused murderer allegedly strangled his new cellmate to death just hours after requesting to move in with him.

Dekota Harvey, 24, who was in jail awaiting his trial for capital murder, reportedly killed Luis Cobos-Cenobio, 30, on Wednesday at the Washington County Detention Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

On Tuesday, Harvey told a prison deputy that he was afraid for his life and specifically asked to be moved to cell R-21, authorities said in a press release.

Officers allowed the move at approximately 8:30pm. But when they checked R-21 shortly after midnight, Harvey’s new cellmate, Cobos-Cenobio, was lying dead on the cell floor.

Harvey had been waiting by the cell door for officers to arrive. He told them he killed his new cellmate because ‘Cobos-Cenobio wanted him to do it.’

Kelly Cantrell, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said Cobos-Cenobio appeared to die by strangulation. No weapons were found in the cell.

Sheriff Tim Helder told NWA Online that Harvey will likely be charged with capital murder, adding: ‘We feel it fits the criteria.’

Harvey was originally arrested in March and was charged with shooting 20-year-old Elizabeth Dawson dead with a single gunshot to the chest after his girlfriend, Courtney Willie, 21, kicked him out of their apartment.

Police say Harvey returned to gather his belongings, but a fight ensued and he fatally shot Dawson, then shot Willie in the leg.

Harvey pleaded not guilty to Dawson’s murder and was due appear in court to begin his trial on September 9.

Cobos-Cenobio was being held in the prison on an attempted capital murder charge for shooting at police during a car chase in November 2018.

According to the Washington County Circuit Court, Cobos-Cenobio attempted suicide multiple times.
