Reading To Face Wolves In The Carabao Cup
The Royals have learned their next opponents in this season’s League Cup.
Reading have another away trip in the League Cup! The Royals have been drawn to face Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the competition, with the game taking place in the week beginning September 23.
This is the first round that Wolves will be playing in, having skipped the first two. It’ll also be our first meeting with them since promotion - our previous visit ending in a 3-0 defeat in the dying days of the Jaap Stam era.
Reading have solely faced lower-league opposition away from home so far in this season’s tournament. First up was the short trip to Wycombe Wanderers, which the Royals came out on top in, but only after penalties.
George Puscas had levelled the scoring with his first Royals goal after Alex Samuel’s opener. In the subsequent shootout, debutant Rafael was the hero, making two saves before Danny Loader’s spotkick sent Reading through.
Next up, the Royals went to Plymouth Argyle in the second round. Jose Gomes made 11 changes to the side that won at Huddersfield Town, bringing in a string of youngsters and fringe players, also handing out a debut for Akin Odimayo and naming Jordan Obita in a starting lineup for the first time in almost two years.
Reading made heavy work of the game itself, with Josh Barrett twice equalising with eye-catching solo goals - Ryan Taylor and Jose Baxter the Pilgrims’ scorers. That was before a late Yakou Meite brace sealed our spot in the third round, the Ivorian winning and converting a penalty, then firing home to make it 4-2.
